A new Learning Management System

Texas A&M University-Commerce is in the process of implementing a new learning management system (LMS) for online courses.  The current system, eCollege, is due for retirement in the fall of 2018.  A committee of campus stakeholders reviewed the top three LMS vendors and chose Brightspace by Desire2Learn as the new system.  The last several months have entailed a great deal of preparation to integrate the new LMS with core campus systems.  The new LMS is called myLeo Online and represents a significant step forward to enhancing our students’ online course experience.

This spring, a group of faculty will be teaching selected courses in the new LMS. This is what we are calling our Beta run for the new system.  We refer to these faculty as our Pathfinders, and they will help us push the limits of the new system.  Students in these courses will get to experience first hand the benefits of a modernized system with responsive design and ease of use.

In the meantime, a massive effort is underway to migrate existing courses from eCollege to the new LMS.  This currently includes over 500 course shells to be moved prior to the retirement of eCollege in September 2018.  We are excited to be engaged in this important project for the university.

It will be a brighter day for our students and our faculty once we have fully transitioned to the new system!  From the start our team branded the effort as Project Nova, to reflect the intensity of energy we are devoting to the migration.

Check out our own Anne Phifer’s blog posts as she writes about her experience teaching in the new system this semester for our “Beta session.”
