Demo Capture Agent Hardware Configuration

To get more acquainted with Matterhorn, the decision was made to use  version 1.0 as a learning and testing ground. The basic configuration was used in the Capture agent. Here are the specifications of the Capture Agent system:

  • Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8500 @ 3.16GHz
  • Ram 4GB
  • Cache size : 6144 KB
  • 220GB of Hard drive
  • Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS (Server Edition)

Since the HD webcams were not compatible with this version of Matterhorn, we decided to use an extra Sony EVI-D30 camera we had on hand. USB microphones were surprisingly supported by Matterhorn 1.0, so we went ahead and used our MXL AC-404 USB microphone. Through testing we discovered that the microphone had long enough range to cover the entire classroom, seating over 50 students. For the presentation capture, we used the Epiphan DVI2USB™ device. The following set of pictures shows how the camera and microphone are installed in the pilot/test classroom.

The best part of the installation was that the classroom already had the required infrastructure to support our project. The ceiling had enough room to attach the suspension rods and there was room for the capture agent sit in the ceiling above the classroom. For support we used the parts that can be easily be found in any hardware store and spray painted them black.
