A&M-Commerce Faculty Members to Publish in Highest-Ranking Artificial Intelligence Journal

Two Texas A&M University-Commerce faculty members, Dr. Christian F. Hempelmann and Dr. Unal Sakoglu, along with Dr. Varadraj P. Gurupur of the University of Central Florida and graduate student Seetaramaraju (Raju)  Jampana, have had their paper accepted at the Expert Systems with Applications journal.

Their paper, entitled “An Entropy-Based Evaluation Method for Knowledge Bases of Medical Information Systems,” discusses a method to develop knowledge bases for medical decision support systems, focused on evaluating those knowledge bases. This project has been ongoing with the Ontological Semantic Technology Lab, where Hempelmann is director.

“It is a great honor for our research group to have the results of our multidisciplinary, multi-campus project accepted by a journal that is currently the most prestigious publication on artificial intelligence, according to Google Scholar,” Hempelmann said. “This reflects the quality of research conducted at A&M-Commerce in general and the Ontological Semantic Technology Lab in particular.”

“Collaborating with Dr. Hempelmann’s Ontological Semantics Technology Lab and applying information theory to evaluation techniques on semantic support systems for medical applications has been a great and productive research project for me and my master’s student Raju,” Sakoglu added. “This collaboration has opened up further research opportunities for my students and me, and I will certainly continue to collaborate on this research.”

Expert Systems with Applications is a refereed international journal that focuses on exchanging information relating to expert and intelligent systems applied in industry, government and universities across the globe. The journal publishes papers that deal with the design, development, testing, implementation, and/or management of expert and intelligent systems, and provides guidelines in the development and management of these systems.

“The work performed under the leadership of Dr. Hempelmann has provided a gateway to a new approach for ontological evaluation technique,” Gurupur said. “This will lead the way to the development of robust Personal Health Information Systems, where strength of the knowledge base is the key to its success.”

“This acceptance of a journal paper particularly motivates us to continue this line of research and involve more students like Raju,” Hempelmann said. “Like him, these students will leave A&M-Commerce not just with a degree, but with hands-on training in research that is documented in publications with their names on them.”

The paper is currently “in press” with no release date. The paper’s progress can be tracked at www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0957417415007277.
