Robots for any occasion

BBC recently reported on “Tengai” a new robot designed to conduct job interviews. It has a humanoid face and impartially asks a predetermined set of questions, recording the responses so that a job recruiter can later review the session. The unit has a built in camera and speaker. The face mimics human expression. The unit itself is sort of a “table-top” form factor, which would theoretically sit opposite an interview subject.

Robots like this could conceivably be used for other “human interactions.” It is not out of the realm of possibility to see them deployed as classroom test proctors. (I’m not sure that is a great idea, but I can easily see that argument being put forth.) There are other applications to consider in educational settings. Career development offices could use them for training students to build interview skills, although this is currently facilitated by human-to-human mock interviews.

As the technology advances, it will be interesting to see how it is adapted to different venues and what types of human interaction it will replace.
