After nearly 8 years, a court ruled that the Google Books digitization project is protected by fair use guidelines for higher education institutions.  The original suit was brought against Google Books by copyright owners claiming infringement.  Judge Denny Chin ruled that the project met many standards of fair use and did not in fact harm the publishers, rather transforming works into “searchable text.”
