The Department of Art offers a comprehensive undergraduate curriculum in the visual arts leading to the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees. Bachelor of Arts degree in Art with emphasis areas in Art History and Studio Art; Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art with emphasis areas in Ceramics, Experimental Studies, Painting, Sculpture, or All-Level Teaching Certification; Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography with emphasis areas in Commercial and Fine Art; Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Visual Communication with emphases in Art Direction, Design, and New Media. Admission into the program does not require a portfolio a review, but only the direct admission into the University. Whether you choose an emphasis in art direction, copywriting, design communications, new media or photography, you will complete a common core of art foundations and visual communication courses in the undergraduate program. For entry into advanced courses—usually by the end of the sophomore year—you must participate in a portfolio review. The portfolio should contain a cover page, application and six creative pieces. Detailed requirements of the review are specified here.

Admission to pursue the MA degree in Art must be granted by both The Graduate School and the Department of Art. The applicant should submit a link to a digital portfolio of work and other supportive materials the department requires. Contact the departmental Graduate Coordinator for these requirements. The graduate degree program in Art is individually designed to meet the unique educational and professional needs of the student. In consultation with the graduate coordinator and the department head, students pursuing the MA degree will devise an appropriate degree plan during the first semester.

Graduate Admissions Information 2019


The MFA is designed to accommodate applicants who are currently employed or have previous experience in the field of visual communication. Students seeking admission to the program must apply to the Office of Graduate Studies and submit all application materials including application, application fee, all official bachelor's transcripts, one letter of recommendation, and a ART portfolio website link, assistantship (optional). Classes begin each fall term for the MFA

The Department of Art offers a general program in Visual Communication leading to the Master of Arts degree. The graduate curriculum includes Creative Methodology, Winning Audiences, Cross-Cultural Marketing, Ideation, Process and Product, User Centered Design Experience, Creative Promotion and Innovation, and Visual Communication electives .  A foreign language is not a requirement for a student pursing a Master of Arts degree.
